Melissa Dishman

certified nurse-Midwife, MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

Melissa is a native Kansan, but found “home” when she moved to DFW in 2011 after graduating from nursing school. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Kansas and practiced as a labor and delivery nurse for several years before returning for her master’s degree at Texas Tech University.

“I really discovered my passion of caring for women while working as a labor and delivery nurse. Therefore, pursuing midwifery seemed the next logical step to continue to empower women at a higher level during one of the most vulnerable, yet pivotal, times in their lives.”

After completion of her midwifery education, Melissa joined a large, high volume OB/GYN group in the DFW area. In a hospital setting, she cared for a variety of women, from normal and low risk, to very high risk and complicated. Melissa had the opportunity to collaborate with physicians while caring and cultivating positive birth experiences for women. However, when the opportunity at Dallas Midwife Associates presented, she jumped at the chance to immerse herself in a midwife driven practice that focuses on the midwifery model of care.

In addition to serving women locally, Melissa’s heart is also outside the national borders. Melissa has participated in yearly medical mission trips to Guatemala since 2012. These opportunities have provided her with rich and rewarding cultural experiences while caring for these women.

Melissa prides herself in investing in the health of women and pregnancy, and partnering with women to provide optimal low intervention birth experiences. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Gary, and her dog, Sadie. She also loves traveling, working out, and cheering on her Kansas Jayhawk basketball team.
